The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV MK III,) named Chandrayaan 2, entered the lunar orbit on the 20th of August.

The Chandrayaan 2 satellite, on the 21st of August, captured the first photo of the Moon and sent it to the ISRO.

The ISRO took to Twitter on the 22nd of August and shared the first image taken by the satellite.

The ISRO announced Mare Orientale basin and Apollo craters were identified in the image sent by Chandrayaan 2.

Vikram Lander, which was carried by Chandrayaan 2, is all set to land on the surface of the Moon on the 7th of September.  The ISRO released a statement which read, “Two orbit manoeuvres will be performed on the lander before the initiation of powered descent to make a soft landing on the lunar surface on September 07, 2019.”

After the lander’s departure, it will fly over the Moon for 14 days and will provide data after reading the Moon’s surface.

If the mission is successful, India will become the fourth country to land on the Moon, after Russia, China and the United States of America (U.S.A.)
