The President of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Mamata Banerjee retained power as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

On the 5th of May, Ms. Mamata Banerjee took the oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, for the third time. The Governor Jagdeep Dhankar administered the oath of the office to Mamata Banerjee at the Raj Bhavan at 10:45 A.M. She took the oath in Bengali and urged political parties to ensure peace in West Bengal.

After the swearing in ceremony, Ms. Mamata Banerjee said, “My first priority is to control COVID-19. I am now going to Nabanna (State administration headquarters.) There I will hold a meeting with my officers. and will take necessary measures to control COVID-19 immediately. I will address (the) media again this evening.”

Speaking about the recent violence in West Bengal, the newly elected CM said, “There is some sporadic violence after the election. We have to control that with a strong hand. In the last two months, the administration system was run by the Election Commission. There was some inefficiency. We have to change the whole setup immediately,” she further added.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar said, “In our constitution, the law has the highest position and we should maintain that. We should immediately take necessary action and send relief to the victims’ families. I have every hope that the Chief Minister on an urgent basis will take all the steps to restore the rule of law(sic.)”

After the swearing in ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and congratulated Mamata Banerjee.

The oath was administered at a low key ceremony with limited leaders of the TMC and other parties. However, no Central leaders were invited for the ceremony in the wake of the raging COVID-19 pandemic. The Left Front and the BJP are said to have boycotted the ceremony. In addition, the Indian National Congress (INC) leader Adhir Chowdhury also gave the program a miss.

It is to be noted, according to Article 164 (4) of the Indian Constitution, a minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the legislature of the state could not be a minister. As per this rule, Ms. Mamata Banerjee needed to be elected to the Assembly within the six months of assuming office.

While Ms. Banerjee took the oath as the 8th Chief Minister of West Bengal today, other winning Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) would take the oath on the 9th of May, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

The Trinamool Congress won against the BJP with 213 seats of the total 292 Assembly seats in the recently held West Bengal Assembly elections.
