M.C. Mary Kom took the gold at the Asian Boxing Championships on Wednesday. The Indian boxing champion beat Hyang Mi Kim from North Korea to take her fifth gold medal home. The 48 Kg category match was conducted at the Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam on Wednesday.

The 34 year old gave it her all in the first match but then slowly lost the momentum in the next two rounds. On Tuesday, Mary Kom beat Tsubasa Komura in a 5-0 victory.

After winning, Mary Kom said, “I am really happy the way this Championship has panned out. I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have supported me even though the world had written me off. I would like to thank my coaching staff who worked hard with me over the last few months.”

With tears in her eyes, the boxer said, “A special word for the professional setup that BFI has put in place, ensuring the best facilities was given during the month long camp and all the exposure trips for the team. Also, I am thankful to BFI president Mr. Ajay Singh especially for showing faith in me.”

In other matches, Indian boxer Sonia Lather made it to the finals in the Featherweight category but unfortunately settled for silver. The Indian boxer lost the gold to Chinese boxer Yin Junhua.
