The Government of India (GoI,) on the 21st of August, appointed Rajiv Gauba, the Home Secretary of India, as the Cabinet Secretary, which is one of the most powerful positions in the GoI.

Rajiv Gauba is a 1982 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Jharkhand cadre, who was appointed the Cabinet Secretary by a unanimous decision of the Cabinet Committee.

The Department of Personnel and Training released an official statement, which read, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Rajiv Gauba, IAS (JH:1982) as Cabinet Secretary with a tenure of two years from 30.08.2019 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Mr. Gauba, a 60 year old IAS officer, previously served as the Home Secretary of India from 2017 to 2019.  He also served as a secretary in the Urban Development Ministry of India and the Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry of India.

Gauba was also the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand in 2015.

Rajiv Gauba replaced Pradeep Kumar Sinha, the former Cabinet Secretary of India, whereas Ajay Kumar Bhalla replaced Rajiv Gauba as the Home Secretary of India.

Mr. Gauba will take over his charge on the 31st of August.

Apart from the Cabinet Secretary and the Home Secretary, the Cabinet Committee appointed a Defence Secretary, Defence Production Secretary and Lokpal Secretary.

Ajay Kumar will be the Secretary of Defence, Subhash Chandra the Secretary of Defence Production and Brij Kumar Agarwal the Secretary of Lokpal.

All the newly appointed officers will take over their charges soon.
