After Delta, Delta Plus and Omicron, a new variant of the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) has been found in Cyprus.
On the 9th of January, Sunday, a professor of biological sciences in Cyprus, claimed that a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 named “Deltacron ” has been reported in a few samples. This new variant has mixed features of both Delta Plus and Omicron.
Dr. eondios Kostrikis, a professor at the University of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology, said, “There are currently Omicron and Delta co-infections and we found this strain that is a combination of these two. The discovery was named Deltacron due to the identification of Omicron-like genetic signatures within the Delta genome.”
According to sources, the new variant has been found in a total of 25 samples, of which 11 are hospitalised. Although there is nothing to worry about this new variant, details about “Deltacron” including transmission, hazards and others are yet to be known.
In addition, ‘Deltacron’ has not been recognised or designated by any international health authority as of now. Meanwhile, the new variant was not something to worry about at the moment, said Cyprus`s Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandelas.
As of now, the scientific name and international recognition of the newly discovered variant is yet to be known.
