On the 12th of January, Wednesday, the Supreme Court (SC) formed the committee to investigate the recent PM Narendra Modi’s security lapse issue.

After a couple of hearings, the Court ordered the Punjab Government and the Central Government to halt their respective investigations into the security breach. It ordered that an independent committee headed by a former SC judge would be formed to begin the probe.

Acting upon the same, the Apex Court, on Wednesday, formed the committee, which would be headed by former SC Judge Ms. Indu Malhotra. The Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA,) the Director-General of Punjab Security, and Registrar of the Haryana and Punjab High Court would be a part of the committee.

The SC bench headed by the Chief Justice of India Mr. N.V. Ramana, comprising of Justices Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli, reviewed the matter. The committee would inquire into the causes of the security breach, persons responsible for the breach and measures to be taken in the future to prevent security breaches of the Prime Minister and other constitutional functionaries. The SC bench said, “A registrar general of the Punjab and Haryana High Court will form the committee which will look into PM Modi’s security breach. The committee will also recommend further action to prevent similar incidents.”

Notably, It is to be noted, in view of the major ‘security lapse’, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, canceled his Ferozepur visit. According to sources, Mr. Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Ferozepur, Punjab, on the 5th of January, Wednesday. He landed at Bhatinda helipad on a special helicopter and was scheduled to reach Ferozepur’s Hussainiwala. However, due to cloudy weather, he decided to reach there via road. On the way, he was stuck for 15 to 20 minutes at a flyover, which was 30 km from Hussainiwala memorial. Reportedly, a group from the Bharatiya Kisan Union blocked the road, preventing PM Modi’s car from moving further.

Considering the situation, the Minister of Home Affairs of India, moved the matter to the Supreme Court, demanding an investigation.
