A new study shows essential oils can make boys grow breasts if they regularly use toiletries with oils like Lavender. The scientific term for breast growth in boys is called gynecomastia which is very rare. However, recently a number of cases of this condition have emerged where the boys frequently use essential oils.
The study published at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Chicago found elements in the essential oils that boost estrogen and inhibit testosterone. There is inconsistency in the effects of the oils as not everyone reacts the same.
These particular essential oils are prominently used in soaps, shampoos, hair styling products and lotions. Recently, there has been an increase in male gynecomastia cases. Doctors have suggested people suffering from gynecomastia to stop using products with essential oils. This in turn reduces and the symptoms eventually subside.
An earlier study specifically named lavender and tea tree oil as the reasons for hindering male hormones. The new study, however, has named eight key chemicals that contribute to promoting estrogen.
An important thing to understand from this study is that it is the individual that reacts to the essential oils. This has called for larger studies on the subject to pinpoint what is the main reason behind the oils unexpected effects.
