A man belonging to Uttar Pradesh allegedly gave triple talaq to his wife for being 10 minutes late. (All names have been withheld due to privacy reasons.) He asked his wife, who went to meet her mother, to come back home in 30 minutes and gave her the talaq for not coming back within the stated time.

The woman for so addressed the media and said, “I went to my mother’s house to see my ailing grandmother. My husband told me to return within half an hour. I was late only by 10 minutes. He then called me on my brother’s mobile number and uttered ‘talaq’ thrice. I was completely shattered by his move.”

The victim also reported domestic violence by her in laws on account of her not being able to give them dowry. She said, “They beat me at times when I am home. I also had an abortion because of their moves. My family is very poor which is why they were unable to give anything to my husband’s family.”

The woman asked the Uttar Pradesh Government to look into the matter and give her justice , or she would end her life. She said, “Now it is the responsibility of the Government to provide justice to me, or else I will commit suicide.”

Ajay Bhadauria, the Area Officer of Aliganj, Etah, Uttar Pradesh, filed a case and guaranteed her that the police will conduct a thorough investigation and take the necessary steps to resolve the matter.

The Lok Sabha passed the Triple Talaq Bill, on the 27th of December. However, the bill is yet to be passed by the Rajya Sabha and then receive the Presidential approval in order for it to become a law.

According to the Triple Talaq Bill, triple talaq is a legal offence which will lead to three years’ imprisonment. Any Muslim man who initiates triple talaq, either orally (face to face or through a phone call,) through writing, or through any social media platform, is punishable under the bill.

A case under the bill will be valid only if the wife or any blood relatives of the wife file a complaint. It is a non bail offence, wherein bail can only be granted by the magistrate after the plea of the wife. The case will be closed if the couple agrees to a settlement.
