Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan took charge as the Chairman of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Board on the 22nd of May.

With this update, India would be an important part of the WHO, a specialised agency of the United Nations (U.N.,) handling international health.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan would be Chairman of the 147th session of the WHO, succeeding Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan.  Mr. Harsh Vardhan said, “I am aware I am entering this office at a time of global crisis on account of this Covid-19 pandemic. At a time, when we all understand that there will be many health challenges in the next two decades. All these challenges demand a shared response.”

Mr. Vardhan would head the 34 member WHO as the Chairman for a 3 year term, beginning from the 22nd of May. 

Union Health Minister and newly appointed WHO Chairman, Dr. Harsh Vardhan would closely work with General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director of the WHO to curb the pandemic crisis globally.

The pandemic crisis due to the Novel Coronavirus affected as many as 5,231,190 people and claimed 335,584 lives till the 22nd of May.
