Updates Of Northeast Delhi Riot, Lt Governor To Visit Affected Areas

The northeast Delhi riot, the most deadly riot of 2020 killed almost 38 people and left more than 200 injured in the past 4 days.

The riot started on the evening of the 24th of February over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.

Updating about the current situation in northeast Delhi,  Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijilal is expected to visit the violence affected areas and meet people there.  Rekha Sharma, the head of the National Commission for Women (NCW) is also going to visit the violence hit areas.  

Local mosques of northeast Delhi also made an announcement on the 28th  of February and appealed to the people to maintain peace. The local mosques also asked people to contact 112  in case of any emergencies and not to fall for false news regarding the violence.

Meanwhile Home Minister of India Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, J.P. Nadda, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assured people of peace and harmony.

The shops have also started to open in northeast Delhi and the situation is said to be under control of the Central Government and Delhi Police.

To help the victims, who suffered in the four days of violence, the BJP, the Delhi Waqf Board and other organisations set up relief camps providing medical facilities, food and  funds for the victims.

Himal Akhtar, a member of the Delhi Waqf Board, said, “As directed by Delhi Waqf Board chairman Amanatullah Khan, the relief camps will be set up in northeast Delhi areas that were affected by the riots. Distribution of milk and biscuits for children and ration kits have also started.”

Security forces and police personnel are on alert with heavy deployment of officials to maintain the peace.

The Delhi Police also imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC,) which restricts any kind of public gatherings, protests and dharnas, till the 24th of March.
