The Hyderabad Police, on the 28th of December, deployed a large number of personnel at Tank Bund, Hyderabad.

On the 26th of December, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019 and the National Population Registration (NPR) decided to conduct a ‘Million March.’  The march was scheduled on the 28th of December. The JAC also sought police permission for the March, which was denied.

Though the Police denied permission, the JAC leaders decided to continue with their Million March at Tank Bund, Necklace Road and also filed a plea in the Telangana High Court (HC.)

The JAC filed a petition in the Telangana HC, challenging the Police’s refusal to let the Committee conduct the March.  However, the Telangana HC refused to review the petitions filed and adjourned the Court to the next hearing, on the 31st of December.  In the wake of the Telangana HC’s announcement, the JAC postponed the Million March.  The final call on the Million March would be taken after the hearing on the 31st of December.

According to sources, on the 28th of December, the Hyderabad Police deployed a huge force at ground level to monitor the situation and avoid any kind of public gatherings.  A police official said, “As a precautionary measure we will deploy adequate number of policemen at the Necklace Road. The message of the protest was widely shared on social media platforms and some persons might try to gather at the place.”

The Police force is said to be deployed as a precautionary measure with regard to the ‘Million March,’ which has been postponed until the next Court hearing.

The next date for the Million March is expected to be announced after the 31st of December.  The March is against the CAA, which promises citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh based on their religion.

 Stay tuned for further updates.
