Recently, the Telangana Government and the British Council decided to take a pilot project to reform the curriculum in higher education institutions in the state.

In regard to this, the Telangana Government identified Osmania University and Kakatiya University to work with Welsh universities (in the United Kingdom) and initiate the curriculum reform process. Global Wales, through the British Council, and the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) from Telangana would start the implementation of the new initiatives to elevate the standard of education in Telangana. The decision was taken after the British Council, which is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural exchange, hosted a policy dialogue with stakeholders from Telangana to discuss the internationalisation of higher education institutions in the state.

In addition, the Global Wales British Council exclusive scholarships would also be launched for the students of Telangana, who wish to study at Wales universities in 2021 academic year. The Telangana Government and the British Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in November 2020. The final announcement was done today, the 8th of July.

With this, the MoU would facilitate the development of collaborative and mutually beneficial programmes in Telangana and contribute to increased research and social linkages in the field of Higher Education between the two entities.

Under the new projects, universities of Bangor and Aberystwyth from Wales will work in partnership with Osmania and Kakatiya universities from Telangana. After three years of pilot project work with Osmania University and Kakatiya University, the project would be extended to 1,000 colleges, which would positively affect 8,00,000 students.

Professor. T. Papi Reddy, chairman of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education, said, “It is our vision for the state of Telangana to be at the vanguard of knowledge and we are certain that our partnership with the Government of Wales will help us realise our goal. The State of Telangana welcomes the new scholarship scheme that complements our own scholarship initiatives for our youth.”

The scholarship programme would also offer 16 scholarships worth Great Britain Pounds (GBP) £5,000, to the “brightest and best students” from Telangana universities. The issued scholarship would give students an opportunity to study a one year post graduate Master’s degree. The universities in Wales where students could study with the scholarship are:

Aberystwyth University

Bangor University

Cardiff University

Cardiff Metropolitan University

Swansea University

University of South Wales

University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Wrexham Glyndwr University.
