The elections for the Hyderabad Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled to be held after the 10th of February.

In regard to this, the Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) issued an official notification.

A senior official of the TSEC said, “Under Section 90(1) of the GHMC Act, the first meeting of the newly-elected members after ordinary elections, including indirect election to offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, shall be held within a month of publication of the newly-elected members’ names in the gazette.”

The SEC also released a list of elected corporators in the recently held Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. The notification included the details about the candidates and their parties.

Meanwhile, a by election would be held for Lingojiguda ward in the GHMC limit. The by polls would be held after the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections.

The Lingojiguda Municipal Ward seat fell vacant after the demise of Ramesh Goud, who won as the Municipal Corporator of the ward.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member died before taking the oath as the new corporator, which resulted in the vacant seat.

In regard to the GHMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections, a meeting would be held on the 10th of February.

This would also be the first meeting of the newly elected corporators after the recent GHMC elections.

The GHMC elections in Telangana were held on the 1st of December and the results were declared on the 4th of December.

This year the post of the GHMC Mayor has been reserved for a woman candidate.

In the 150 member Municipal Corporation, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has 56 members, the BJP has 47, the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has 44 and the Indian National Congress (INC) has two members.

There is no absolute majority for any party to elect its own candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

However, after joining hands, the TRS and the AIMIM are likely to reach an understanding and secure these two posts for themselves.

The final decision would be taken before the 10th of February, as the current term of the GHMC Mayor and the Deputy Mayor end on the 10th of February 2021.

Stay tuned for further updates.
